چکیده

A prototypepositroncamerahasbeenconstructedconsistingof two highdensityavalanche chamber (HIDAC) detectors operated in coincidence with a resolving time (2r) of 40 nsec. The detectors are multiwire chambers, with specially constructed lead converters added to improvethe photondetectionefficiencyat 511 keV.ThecurrentHIDACdetectorshavea singles efficiency of @—12%, a sensitive area of 31 x 31 cm and an intrinsic spatial resolution of <2 mmfull widthat halfmaximum(FWHM).Duringdataacquisition, the detectorsare rotatedaroundthe patientin orderto collecta completeangulardataset.A three-dimensional image of the positron distribution is reconstructed from a single scan by weighted backprojectionof the data into a matrixof either64 x 64 x 64 or 128 x 128 x 16 voxels. Thecamerapoint responsefunctionis deconvolvedby frequency-spacefiltering.Corrections aremadeduringbackprojectionboth for photonattenuationandfor spatialvariationsin point source sensitivity. The reconstructed image is fUrther corrected for contributions from acodentalandscatteredcoincidencesanddisplayedas a sequenceof two-dimensional transverse, sagittal,or coronalsections.Inaddition,three-dimensional displayis available using shaded graphics techniques. The prototype camera is currently undergoing clinical evaluation.

From 3-D positron emission tomography to 3-D positron emission tomography/computed tomography: what did we learn?

The recent introduction of combined positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) scanners is having a far-reaching effect on the field of medical imaging by bringing functional imaging to the forefront in radiology, oncology and other specialties. The PET/CT scanner is an evolution in technology combining two well-developed imaging modalities: anatomical imaging with CT and funct...

Amorphous selenium (a-Se) avalanche photodetector for applications in Positron Emission Tomography (PET)

Although avalanche amorphous selenium (a-Se) is a very promising photoconductor for a variety of imaging applications, it is currently restricted to applications with electron beam readout. This is performed with a vacuum pick-up tube called a High-gain Avalanche Rushing Photoconductor (HARP) Vidicon. The electron beam readout is compatible with high definition television (HDTV) applications, b...

Neural Imaging Using Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes

Introduction: This paper analyses the ability of single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) for neural imaging. The current trend in the production of SPADs moves toward the minimumdark count rate (DCR) and maximum photon detection probability (PDP). Moreover, the jitter response which is the main measurement characteristic for the timing uncertainty is progressing. Methods: The neural imaging pro...

Characterisation of Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes for medical imaging applications

Recently developed multipixel Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes (G-APDs) are very promising candidates for the detection of light in medical imaging instruments (e.g. positron emission tomography) as well as in high-energy physics experiments and astrophysical applications. G-APDs are especially well suited for morpho-functional imaging (multimodality PET/CT, SPECT/CT, PET/MRI, SPECT/MRI). G-AP...
